The 2012 HEALTHCARE DESIGN Conference taking place at the Phoenix Convention Center, Phoenix, AZ will again feature a design charrette sponsored by Steris Corporation and GRAPHISOFT. The charrette, an academic initiative that began twenty-five years ago, is led by the AIA Knowledge Community, Academy of Architecture for Health. This annual event brings together four universities that offer an accreditation for healthcare design.

This year’s teams hail from Arizona State University, The University of Nebraska at Lincoln, Clemson University and The University of Virginia.  Each of the four teams consists of five students and a faculty advisor GRAPHISOFT donate printers for the teams to use, and at the end of the event, the teams take the printers back to school. The charrette takes place in conjunction with the annual conference, which is devoted to the ways in which responsibly built environments directly impact the safety, operation, clinical outcomes, and financial success of healthcare facilities now and into the future.

Over a 48 hour period, student teams take on a challenge provided to them by the charrette directors. The teams use a variety of BIM software, ArchiCAD among them, or even hand drawings to make two presentations on their conclusions – one on Sunday and the second on Monday morning. Because of the time constraint, the students are able to use methods they’re comfortable with in providing 30X42 boards demonstrating their concepts.

The charrette results in unique but real, valid and faculty supported ideas that often become incorporated into future curriculum or provide ideas for the universities in semesters to come. This year the students will be tweeting their progress using hashtag #HCDCharrette

With over 4100 participants at the 2011 HEATHCARE DESIGN Conference, this is the industry’s best-attended conference where attendees can earn up to 24 continuing education credits, network with peers, and influence the direction of the industry as it advances into the future.
